About UDI — Unique Device Identification explained

A UDI code identifies a medical device through distribution and use. It has two parts: a Device Identifier (DI), which is fixed and identifies the specific version or model and its labeler, and Production Identifiers (PI), which vary — lot or batch, serial number, expiration date, and production date. Codes are issued through three accredited agencies: GS1 (GTIN-based), HIBCC (HIBC), and ICCBBA (ISBT 128). The UDI appears on the label in both human-readable and machine-readable AIDC form, and on reusable devices it must also be marked directly on the device itself.
